3. Can I damage my Xbox or PC by hotswapping?
Yes. Since you are swapping cables while the power is on, this can possibly cause electrical damage. Also, there is a difference in ground voltages (this can be over 100V!). NB: A good safety precaution is to connect the metal chassis of the Xbox to the PC case with a wire (i.e. alligator clips).
If you plan to do a lot of softmods, then I recommend using a memory card and exploitable game, instead of hotswapping all the time. You can use a gamesave exploit to get FTP access to the drive.

Method 1: You have both the Xbox and PC hooked up as normal. You will use the Xbox power supply to supply the power to the Xbox hard drive. In order to make up for the floating point ground, you will connect a wire with alligator clips from the PC metal case chassis to the metal Xbox chassis to short out any possible extra voltage and keep them equal.

Method 2: You have a 4-pin molex power cable in your PC long enough to reach the Xbox. So you hook up the power cord from the computer into the Xbox hard drive. So therefore, the computer’s power supply is supplying the power to the Xbox hard drive. This way, there is no floating point ground (because the hard drive is connected to the computer’s power supply) and you don’t need the chassis connecting wire.

Si no entendi mal... parece que depende de que voltaje tiene la tierra o el chasis de ambos aparatos.. xbox - pc o xbox - xbox.
Esto porque a veces la tierra de uno no es la tierra del otro, y cuando conectas los IDE hay un voltaje entre cada uno de 100v ... por eso se chamuscan los HD.. o hasta posiblemente la pc se pueda quemar.
La solucion o la prevención a esto es.... no hacer hotswap jajaj.... broma... es usar una cable que conecte ambos chasis... Aunque si hay una diferencia de voltage entre ambos.. haras un corto.. se me ocurre usar un voltimetro, medir y si hay esa diferencia de voltaje apagar todo y el cable del xbox voltearlo para invertir la polaridad de fase y tierra. Luego volve a medir el voltaje entre ambos chasis que debe dar cero. De todas formas se recomienda hacer un puente entre ambos chasis. Otra opcion es conectar el molex del PC al disco duro y asi alimentarlo desde el PC, las masas o tierras seran las mismas.
